Looking at the person in their context to understand. Informed by clients - they are the expert in their life: we bring our own sw knowledge, we look at social context/culture/family / our understanding of oppression / clinical experience. Figuring out where ppl are at in their stage of understanding (ie not all clients are coming on a volunteer basis) Pre-contemplation: they may not perceive their problem as a problem. Ex youth in high school told to go see a social worker. They might recognize that there is a problem but they aren"t committed. Preparation: made a decision and maybe made some small changes. Action: they have made changes of at least one day to 180 days. Maintenance: when the change has occurred for 6 months.
