SOCWORK 3E03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Marsha M. Linehan, Problem Solving, Behaviorism
Document Summary
Interactive process where the social worker and the client work together to try and deal with the problem that is presented to the client. Private process engaged in by the worker where we try to determine whether the problem presented by the client is the real/true problem, or whether there"s another underlying problem that isn"t being made explicit. Problems are within the individual (ex. self esteem issues) or they can be interactive (ex. conflict the client has with a family member or friend, or issues rooted in environment) Problems can be dealt with or resolved by gaining insight: ex. Client is critical of partner, recognizes that he"s so critical because of feelings of past inadequacy: solution would be to develop stronger problem solving abilities, or learning problem solving strategies. Making suggestions or giving advice do not detract a persons independence/autonomy, they actually empower the person by strengthening ones ego.
