Definitions of high and low culture: these are stereotypes and de nitions according to grazian on how we see high and low culture. What belongs in each of these categories is socially constructed and that also meas that they are inconsistent. High culture: these characteristics are formed in relation to what we view as low art/low culture. Referred to as high art as well. For example, opera, literature and theatre: high art is richer and more complex, high culture needs training to understand. Formal training to understand and appreciate: high art creates a serious, intellectual experience and it is harder to enjoy. We enjoy it because it challenges us and causes us to re ect on ourselves and society. We do not enjoy purely for entertainment: very related to re nement" and cultivating". Since it intellectual inspires us and enriches us as human beings. Low culture: also known as popular culture. Monday, march 6, 2017: low culture is simplistic.
