Definitions of families and marriage and implications. Definitions of family shape government social policy and inform the decision we make about how to live our lives. Impact us directly as citizens because our government relies on very specific definitions of family. Historically those definitions have excluded a lot of people and families. Allows canadians to apply for government benefits under the employment insurance schema. To care for a family member who is ill. Your child or the child of your spouse or common-law partner (of at least one year) Excludes grandparents, siblings, in-laws, same sex partners. Policies that assume financial support (i. e. filial responsibility laws) Defining marriage: same-sex marriage provides policy reform and societal recognition of same sex relationships (refer to ch 17, siq, green) Families are socially constructed and change over time and place. Heterosexual nuclear family; sexual division of labor. 5 functions of families (regulating sexual activity, economic cooperation, reproduction, socialization, social support)
