Sociology week 10 & 11 lecture 1: education. 2 siq: no gender differences in earnings, graduates of fine arts programs and languages earn less than sociology graduates, graduates from no field earn significantly more than sociology graduates do, b and c only, a and c only. Examines functions of educational institutions (i. e. selection, socialization) Looks at the functions of our social institutions. Schools serve this function of sorting students channeling them in difference of ability. To make sure the most capable students go on to university and the less capable students don"t go to university. They say the sorting and selection is done of the basis of merit hardest working/ smartest students get channeled into university / elite programs. Sociologists make this distinction between contest mobility and sponsored mobility. Open high schools to just about everybody. A lot of countries in the 8th grade, give students standardized tests to determine what school they go to.
