Presents a fundamental shift in the way we communicate. Structural functionalism: likely explore the way media can be used to reinforce shared values, ex. Canadians are concerned that there is not enough canadian national culture in the media: media reinforces social solidarity. Interested in text exchanges w/ each other etc. to tell us about social interactions: looks at micro interactions, ch. 6 siq wellman: networked individualism : idea that new technologies creates a change in how people create a sense of community. Conflict theory: the ruling economic elite use the media to assert their own interests, the critical perspective: consistent with conflict theory, examines the media from the view of social conflict and inequality. 1st string of cp dominant ideology- the media just serves the interest of the ruling class; by controlling the ideas that are put out; not just any set of ideas, very specifically the ideas/rules that support the ruling class.
