He was worried about these growing cities because people would experience anomie (collapse of social norms) Anomie people moving to these big cities do not have a sense of what is right or wrong. He worried that these cities were characterized by an absence of social solidarity. In contrast in rural society, he felt that village society was held together quite nicely by what he called, mechanical solidarity. Mechanical solidarity everyone has a clear sense of right and wrong and tied to religion. And as people were moving to the cities, he believed that cities were these bad places that had a lot social pathologies (example: juveniles delinquency, crimes, marital/family breakdowns) Conflict theory: role of class-relations and divisions between working and capitalist classes, thomas malthus ideas about population growth. He was similar to emile durkheim and had worries about population growth.
