Writing in late 1800"s to early 1900"s. Q how might we take the role of the other in deciding how to prepare for a job interview: mead says taking the role of another is something we learn in stages. First stage: imitative stage, young kids no concept of being separate from others. Second stage: we don"t understand one"s position in relation to the larger social group, eg. Team sport- very young kids (4-5 yrs) playing soccer. At this stage they don"t understand their own position and the overall objectives. They pass the ball to the opposite teams or score in their own nets. Understanding your position in relation to the larger social group. Generalized other : understand how others in general might respond or react to us, we value the opinions of the larger society, eg. Doing something embarrassing in public, in front of strangers. You feel embarrassed because we internalize the values and beliefs of the larger society.
