The more strongly anchored or attached a person is to society (through their social relationships, such as marriage), the less likely they are to commit suicide. Was previously understood to be psychiatric --> he took a sociological approach. People who belong to groups with lots of integration are less likely to commit suicide compared to people who do not. If solidarity is very low, they are more inclined to commit suicide. If solidarity is too high, they are also more inclined. Women have lower rates of suicide b/c they are more anchored to society b/c of their social connected imbedded in their care giving roles. Protestants have higher rates of suicide b/c they didn"t promote a lot of integration and solidarity. Societies characterized by low social solidarity will have high rates of suicide. Societies characterized by very high levels of social solidarity will have low levels of suicide.
