Lecture 14: class, health inequality and social justice. Medical model versus a sociological perspective on health. Medical model: physical health as a reflection of things such as genetics, hereditary factors. Sociology: health, illness and dying are shaped by the larger societal context. Durkheim: the more strongly anchored an individual is to society, the less likely they are to commit suicide. Suicide rates are related to the level of social solidarity. Frequency of interaction within a social group and level of shared beliefs within a social group. If solidarity is very low or very high, suicide will increase. Medical interpretations of postpartum depression - sleep deprivation, difficulty of delivery. Examine social support for new mothers in transition to motherhood. Mothers that receive more support are less likely to experience postpartum depression. Health care system has not been changing. Originally designed to deal with acute illness not chronic illnesses that are more typical for an aging population.
