Lecture 15: class, health inequality and social justice. 86 wealthiest canadians, held the same amount of wealth as the 11 million poorest. Change in the tax structure that favours the rich. Deregulation of the labour market which favours big business and disadvantages labour. Declines in unionization and manufacturing - relationship to a decline in wages. Changes reflect globalization and transnational corporations and their loyalty to share- holds. Growth in precarious and non-standard employment - impacts health, decrease in job security. Neoliberalism, economic rationalism trickle down economic theory: if we remove barriers for the private sector, this will promote economic growth which will then lead to job creation and economic prosperity for a country. Critique: wealth by corporations and individuals does not always lead to job creation. Material/structural pathways: inequality leads to poor nutrition, substandard housing and inequalities in access to health care. Behaviour/cultural pathways: lower socio-economic groups may adapt unhealthy lifestyles (ie. smoking)
