Slide 14-15: socialization across the life course (1) The socialization process is culturally specific and historically embedded. Ie. the idea of empty nest syndrome is conceptualized (certain place and time) Couples who are married, but living in separate dwellings (often in the same community) Ie 9/11 has different effects based on when you were born (you"d be more traumatized if you were alive during it) The socialization process impacts the sense of self. Social interaction is a sort of play in which people present themselves so that they appear in the best possible light. Major idea that all of our interactions are performative, we are putting on a play. Assumed that we had no true self. Where people perform social roles in expected ways. Roles determined by the situation and by others. The setting and kinds of behaviour we engage in when we feel less social pressure to behave in a particular way.
