Decided they weren"t british but the liked the british, but they knew that they were not americans - had to create own identity so we are not absorbed into. If we were english we were definitely christian; if we were french we were definitely. Mass education did not exist before 1800s. Didn"t feed a certain type of religion (but was definitely lowkey anglican) but definitely. Publicly funded protestant and catholic schools in lower canada. The first schools in new france were operated by the church.
