Document Summary
Structural explanations: opportunities and constraints in marriage and in the labour market shape outcomes. Gender socialization theories don"t explain why women who reject traditional gender roles end up in traditional arrangements: research by gaskell on expectations of high school students. Interviewed boys and girls in highs school about the future late 70s. Girls didn"t believe in the traditional structure of marriage and saw themselves in the labour market, ambivalent about motherhood, but knew that they would end up in this role of stay at home mother, house maker. Believed that they would marry a man that was financially well off and they could be economically dependent on them. Identified a lack of child care as a factor that would push them out of the labour market. Felt they could rely on their mothers to help them with child care. Canadian government has moved in the direction of less state support for families. Families are responsible for taking care of themselves.
