When a discourse is not assessable to someone, they have to conform to what is assessable. Ex. homosexuality is not mentioned, so people who are homosexual self-regulate their behaviours to pass as heterosexual to avoid discrimination and abuse, they try to conform. 1950s historically unique because of the embracing of families (marriage and having children), this reversed trends in the 30s-40s of declining fertility. Educational gap between men and women increased. She looked at how the cold war impacted family life.
