Shift to factory based on textile production and industrial capitalism: productive activity linked to production of exchange (associated, economic dependence on males, demise of handicraft system. Demand that wages should be set high enough so as to allow a male wage earner to support his wife and children. Assumption that if you are a male working in the labour market, they needed the higher wage to support their families. Unemployed: no current job, but actively looking for one. Participation rates = labour force/potential labour force. Retirements: many older women appear to be re-entering the workforce, retirement causes the rate difference to diminish/dappen (early retirements more favoured by men) Rates of participation highest in sweden, canada, the usa, the uk and new zealand. The greater the female rate the more opportunities for women. Remember this does not necessarily challenge the position of women in society. The greater the female rates of participation, the more economic opportunities there are for women.
