Both are constructs you learn about it the minute you"re in a place that is not homogenous. Race was created to fulfil a labour demand: had to get a group of inds who you could exploit, have an economic component. Inds divided based on social mobility in exchange for turning a blind eye to people ideals. Strat of settlers was to divide the slaves: divide groups to make some more exploitable.
