Understanding sociological theory: types of sociological theory, classical theory, marx, durkheim, weber. These three are so important because their writings involve what most sociologists see as the foundational texts in sociology. Their writings have the body of conceptual knowledge that all sociologists are expected to know: early theorists of gender and race. In the 19th century there were a number of theorists of gender and race, and were ignored and overlooked at the time. While they were overlooked, their work was important in the late 20th century, and their ideas were recognized and became part of sociological thought. They were overlooked but are now important since the past 40-50 years: contemporary theory. Has engaged with and tried to build on the work of the early classical theorists.
