Structural functionalism a sociological theory that was developed in the u. s. during the early 20th century. It is concerned with analyzing the structures of society as well as the functions of these structures/social institutions. Also looks at the inter-dependence of social intuitions, and how these intuitions contribute to the order and maintenance of society. Emergence of sf influenced by the work/ideas of emile. Durkheim, though he himself was not a structural functionalism (the theory emerged after his death). Durkheim was interested in social order, organic solidarity (inter- dependence). Social institutions rely on each other/work together for the survival of the society. Key theorists talcott parsons and robert k. merton, kingsley. Became the dominant sociological theory in the 40"s and 50"s. It fit in with the times (the 40"s and 50"s were conservative decades). The theory focused on social order and maintaining society the way it is which is why it was so popular in this time.
