Media organizations in relation to the maintenance and stability of society: Mainstream media conveys messages that reflect the dominant norms and values in society. Helps to facilitate social order e. g. local news/television news often focuses on crime, the criminal gets punished. Reinforces social order and the idea that you"re not supposed to commit crime. If you do you will be caught and punished alternative media is dysfunctional in relation to maintaining society, because it conveys messages of social movements/change. Don"t have positive/negative function in present day society, even if they had important functions in the past. e. g. by-laws created in the 19th century that had to deal with old practices that are not done in present society. Mass-media are more functional because they convey ideological messages that maintain social order. Alternative media is dysfunctional but there is more mass-media than alternative media, so media is more functional than dysfunctional.
