Productive work is good the human ability to create things is satisfying and rewarding. But under capitalism it becomes bad because it comes to involve exploitation and alienation. Refers to process through which the propertied class appropriates labour effort of property-less class for its own material advantage. The commodity and its properties the most basic unit of capitalist production. Use value (refers to value of commodity to satisfy a human want) and exchange value (refers to value of commodity in the market place). E. g. an automobile"s exchange value is its price. The price (exchange value) will be affected by supply and demand in the capitalist marketplace. Not many cars from the 1930"s low supply high demand, high exchange value. Exploitation exists due to creation of surplus (under slavery/feudalism) Some of what they produce will be used to keep them alive (e. g. food) but most goes to lords/masters. Exploitation exists due to creation of surplus value (concept marx developed).
