Conceptualization (developing a precise definition of what we"re examining) Operationalization identifying indicators of measurement oh what we"re studying (e. g. religion frequency of attendance at religious services) It doesn"t matter what we think about religion is good or bad, it only matters that we measure it objectively. Measure religion and related social issues (e. g. effects of religiosity on attitudes) His first book the division of labour in society (1893) It was actually a revised/extended version of his ph. d. dissertation. He saw the division of labour as a social fact shapes, structures and constrains our behaviour. Exists when members of society are bound together. He argued that there is 2 types: mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity. Exists in early societies e. g. hunting and gathering societies. It operates in an automatic fashion (like a machine). Division of labour small population, low division of labour.
