Move away from non-rational explanations of the world (discouraged religion, myth, tradition to understand the world) Philosophers were inclined to reject traditional authority (religious organizations) Oriented toward social change: the conservative reaction to the enlightenment. They (conservative thinkers) wanted to assert the importance of non- rational explanations. Wanted social order (maintain society the way it was) Both had an impact on sociology and sociological theory: impact of the enlightenment and the conservative reaction on sociology.
