Parsons: developed structural functionalism (he"s the name we associate with this theoretical approach) Merton: revised structural functionalism (was a student of parsons, critical of his mentor tried to revise some of the problems he saw with structural functionalism) Parsons: function (agil scheme, which involves adaptation, goal attainment, integration, latency his work was largely at the macro-level) Merton: dysfunctions; nonfunctions; net balance; manifest and latent functions (involved with both the macro and micro level, talked about functions in regards to the entire society) Building on marx but also misinterpreted him (thought the economic aspects shaped everything however this is not the way he saw this, wasn"t an economic determinist their approach was entirely non-dialetical) Reaction to economic determinism, tried to show the role of culture and ideology (ie. gramsci and hegemony)
