Idea of rationalization is central to mass production and large bureaucratic firms. Gendered meanings attached to individuals and entire institutions (eg, work and family) Traditional understanding: nuclear family": nuclear family: cohabiting man and woman who maintain a socially approved sexual relationship and have at least one child. Chosen families (no blood relationship and forms very close ties with friends) Increasing number of women in workforce: more dual earner families. Longer hours spent at work: means there"s less leisure time or consistent family time. Limited work flexibility: greater demands put on wrokers.
