Sociological imagination: individual experiences connected to a social context: the ability to see the connections between personal problems you might be experiencing to a broader social construct. Why are households shrinking: women have children at later ages; smaller window for fertility. Declining fertility (women in paid employment with higher education have fewer children, also due to delayed childbearing which shortens reproductive years; costs of children) Aging population means more widows and widowers living alone. More divorced people remaining on their own (why?) Opportunities to build life experiences outside of a relationship. Lat (living apart together) relationships are increasing. Men have higher rates of cohabitation and remarriage than women, and do so faster than women. Changes in marriage, fertility, divorce, lone-parent families, and increasing diversity, including: same sex, cohabiting couples with(out) children, transnational (astronaut families, parachute kids, multi-family/intergenerational, adult children living with parents ( boomerang , interracial/ethnic/faith unions, blended families before they grow up.
