Government uses deiniions of family in creaing social policy. Only as recently as 50 years ago this standard deiniion of family used by sociologists and others was really narrow. Mom, dad and their kids (nuclear, hetero family) Deiniions of family also shape each of us personally, shape decision we make about families that we form. Deiniions of family impact us directly because our government relies on speciic deiniions of family and what consitutes family/family members. Historically these deiniions have excluded many diferent kinds of families. Gov excluded grandparents, siblings, in-laws, same-sex partners very limited deiniion of family. As a result of public criicism, government expanded deiniion. Can receive beneits as long as you can show that the person you"re caring for is really like family. Described as expensive tax git for the reach. Made argument it will increase income inequality in canada. Government policies imbedded with speciic assumpions about obligaions toward family members.
