Lecture 6 the logic of sampling (sept 23 to oct 3) The process of selecting observations is called sampling. Key to generalizing from a sample to a larger population is probability sampling. Random sampling: any outcome has the exact same chance of occurring as any other outcome . You can"t have another group becoming selective than another. Random sampling: every unit of observation in a population has the same chance of being selected into a sample. Helps us produce samples that are representative of the wider population that they are drawn from. Population: any entire collection of people, groups, organizations or things from which we may collect data. It is the entire group we are interested in, which we wish to describe or draw conclusions about. People - interested in studying a certain type of class. Polls pop would be the entire elector (ppl eligible to vote) Firms firm size & profits (if size effects firm"s profits)
