It"s disparaging comments: fat talk is any negative talk about your body weight, shape, appearance or fitness, how often do you engage in fat talk, how often do you overhear fat talk, fat talk is a social norm. Even if they were not on diet or concerned with their weight (so normative: 1. Sign of distress (ugh i"m so fat, i feel so gross: allowed them to vent and saying they"re having a bad day w/o saying that, 2. Affirmation: call of support from peers, get told they are not fat, 3. Informing others that you are about to make a bad choice with eating: you just want them to know that, bring the attention to yourself before anyone else does, 4. Knowing your flaws before someone else does: call attention to self before another one does, 5. avoiding ostracism.
