Learning outcomes: articulate the basis of a conflict perspective on society, recognize how conflict analysis applies to the study of contemporary culture, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of conflict approaches to the study of culture. The conflict perspective is organized around the idea that society is comprised of groups who are continuously engaged in conflict. Traditionally associated with this approach is class conflict. Today, this is often applied to analyzing any relationship between social groups that are conflictual due to unequal power relations within society. Conflict perspective is also known as the critical perspective. Power might derive from access to financial resources, material wealth, symbolic status, or some combo of these.
