For early sexologists, sexuality could be explained by: o o: discovering individual"s inner essence or truth, sexuality an inherent, biological force or drive that needed to be satisfied if not, problems (familial/social unrest) Analyzing sexuality from perspective of natural sciences: by establishing sexual norms and deviations, what was normal, what was abnormal. Goals of early sexologists: (i) devise a science of sex that was rational, empirical, and value neutral (ii) create taxonomy of sexual variations. From sexual inversions (homosexuality, transvestitism) to zoophilia (bestiality) During this period categories of the homosexual & the heterosexual emerge: as particular personality types with distinct behaviors o, homosexual-effeminate man, lesbian-masculine woman. Original meaning of sodomite referred to any form of sexual activity other than heterosexual vaginal intercourse. Included masturbation, oral sex whether hetero or homo o: epilepsy=sexual deviant. Other deviant categories included: pedophile, frottager, voyeur, transvestite, cross dresser, chronic masturbator, nymphomaniac, frigid & sexually immature woman.
