Most babies will see the mirror as an extension of the room. On some animals the mirror test shows some signs of self awareness. A red dot is placed on the animal where they can"t see it normally but have to see it through the mirror. If they start to touch themselves to find it they have self awareness. Our understanding of the self is drawn from symbolic interaction theory. The self is the individual viewed as both the source and the object of reflexive behaviour.
