Document Summary

Run by philip zimbardo at stanford university in 1971. What happens if you put people in an evil place/negative environment. Silver reflective sunglasses for guards = power and authority. Deputation process dehumanizing and making fun. By day to the prisoners started to rebel and guards got tougher. A prisoner told the rest that they were not allowed to leave. The prisoner started acting crazy so they would let him go/leave experiment. 2nd prisoner to rebel barricaded his room, tried to leave; he thought that he had really become a prisoner. Day 5 prisoner 416 opposed the authority by refusing to eat. Power corrupts- victims do not stop the abuse. Experiment stopped because it was recognized that it was unethical. Despite the clear suffering, other guards never stopped the behaviour. Put good people in an evil place the evil place won over the good people. Power of social roles shape behaviour in ways we wouldn"t never think.
