Socpsy 1z03 lecture 1: introduction to social psy- chology. * tutorials begin week 3 (not every week) The systematic study of the nature and causes of human social behaviour . Stanley was a social psychologist in the 1950s. Interested in trying to understand what happened during world war 2 (the atroci- ties that occurred in nazi germany) Over 1/2 of the experiment participants administered the electric shock. Found that he could change the outcome of how many people administered shock based on a few factors: Closeness to the person receiving the electric shock. Milgram"s study suggests that more than half of people would do it. Personality, on it"s own, cannot explain a person"s behaviour. Social psychologists see how social traits can affect the psychology of people. Social psychologists are skeptical of personal experience as a means to under- standing human social behaviour. Recognizing the power of the situation in human social behaviour.
