Deviance: thoughts, feelings or behaviours that depart from accepted practices in a society or group . How deviance and crime isn"t just an individual decision. The choice to be deviant is made in light of societal context anomie/strain theory. Often happens during time of social upheaval. More likely to commit suicide in this state. Deviance is a natural outcome of societal conditions when someone experiences the inability to achieve the goals of society in a legitimate way. Deviance only occurs when an individual"s ties to society are weakened in some way. If immediate social environment is not strong we are more motivated to engage in deviance. Decision somebody might make to follow the rules. The extent that somebody participates in activities in society. People"s respect for law and order in society as a whole. What is normal and what is deviance. Group members provide knowledge and motives to commit crime.
