Meaning of identity: one has to interpret earlier childhood and which important individuals are in their lives, direction and commitment, trust in personal ideal, includes sex role identi cation, look at individuals beliefs (cultural, religious). How past lends meaning to present and directs meaning to future. Have to integrate important factors in our life. Established identity comes along with us (what we were told) and connect it to our anticipated identity (identity for the future). Identity is transformed over this adolescent period (from established to anticipated) Traditionally adolescents are thought to engage in a period of identity crisis. Erikson interviewed many adolescents and said its not an identity crisis, it is a period of accommodation or a period of integration. It is a dynamic process of testing, integrating and questioning things. Crisis: a situation of emotional and mental stress.
