Social work lecture 5: social work with communities october 19th 2015. Note: tutorials will begin 15mins after the lecture ends (8:15-8:30-ish). To keep in mind: your readings will cover a lot of material about each level of practice, if you move on in the program you"ll spend individual whole courses on individual social work, group work etc . Was also a nurse and played role in women"s movement. Grew up in residential schools; white settlers took indigenous children away from families and he recognized this first hand. Got tuberculosis while in res school and got lifelong disabilities. Fought for rights of aboriginal people; community thinker and organizer. A community is groups of people living together, same geographical location, directed towards same goal or concerns, identity or experiences of oppression, intentional/constructed and institutional communities. Communities create a sense of purpose, a similar goal. Shared advocacy and social change, carries with it a better sense of health and well-being.
