Social work - lecture #1 -the canadian context of social work. In canada we have a welfare state- meaning we have a system where the state protects the health and well-being of its citizens, particularly those is social and financial need: government using their power to organize welfare state. Canada ( and this 3 way "alliance" do not always agree) (public, private non-profit and private for profit: examples: ymca, st matthews house, good shepherd (not government run, but provide a social service, non-profit). Key approaches to social welfare: residual view - limited temporary response to human need and government should play a limited role in the distribution of social welfare. Direct social work practice- individual counseling, group work, community development, often in public or privately funded social services agencies. Indirect social work practice -government of ngos - social policies. Micro, mezzo and macro social work - direct, groups/communities, orgranzations/laws/policies.
