The folks at the top have a lot of money and everyone works for them. People at the bottom hold that structure up, because we go to work and consume. People in the middle control - ensure that we stay within this system. Competition between private companies over where to sell their goods and the pro ts available to be earned. Characterized by rollercoaster cycles of stagnation, austerity then growth spikes. The result is inequality and the system inherently produces con ict between those who work for wages and those who employ them. The reason you need growth is to ensure that you are always making a pro t. Some people own things, others do not, there is always con ict. Different kinds of economies exist: what we call "the economy", went through many stages en route to capitalism, we shouldn"t understand "the economy" and capitalism as identical.
