SOCWORK 2BB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Social Capital, Cultural Capital
Document Summary
Lecture 4 class, capital & the social order (switched lecture with november 2nd, readings stay the same) We all interact and respond on a symbolic level. Class hierarchy becomes objectified into things including the human body (language, mannerism), so that some are encoded with superior/positive value and others with inferior/negative value. Everyone is classified and labeled with a social class. Language: the way one speaks tell you about their class, accents & ways of speaking, conveys social and symbolic meaning. Behaviours like carrying a briefcase: the way you behave carries a social meaning with you. Behaviours like going to a certain hospital: private vs public, shows that you have money/wealth. Social inequity is produced on a symbolic level. Oppression/inequalities are about something that is produced on a daily basis on a symbolic level. People purse a social image of social status (carrying a brand name purse)
