PSYC 1104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Parasympathetic Nervous System, Sympathetic Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System
Document Summary
An intrapersonal state in response to an internal or external event. Three components: physiological - bodily arousal (heart rate, temperature, breathing rate, cognitive - subjective appraisal and interpretation of one"s feelings and environment, behavioural - physical expression of emotion; verbal or non-verbal emotional expressions. Autonomic nervous system = physiology changes: sympathetic nervous system - fight or flight (internal resources, parasympathetic nervous system - calms the body, more energy conserving state once the crisis has passed. If fight or flight stays prolonged, the body starts to become tired and wears out, shuts down. Appraisal of emotion: eliciting situation will influence the emotion you experience. Cognitive component of emotion includes interpretation of physiological response. Behavioural component of emotion: actions and expressions. Research shows us that engaging in behaviours typically associated with an emotion can lead us to begin feeling it. Three ways to measure emotions: behavioural displays of emotion (facial and verbal expressions, self-reports of emotion (low validity, psychophysiological reactions (face electromyography)
