PSYC 2245 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Pathos, Cognitive Dissonance, Elaboration Likelihood Model
Document Summary
An evaluation of objects, ideas, people, consisting of affective, cognitive, and behavioural components. Affectively-based attitudes: based primarily on feelings. Liking something we like, not because of its practical value: politics, sex, religion, we form attitudes with our hearts, not our minds, three common things. Don"t result from natural examinations of issues. Not governed by logic (persuasive arguments rarely change them) Limited to people"s values, challenging them challenges their values. Cognitive-based attitudes: based on logic and reason. Explicit attitudes: attitudes consciously endorsed and can easily be reported. Implicit attitudes: attitudes that are involuntary, uncontrollable, and at times unconscious. For negative feelings towards other people, this is usually affectively-based. For positive feelings towards other people, this is usually cognitively-based. The theory of planned behaviour: the best predictors of a person"s planned, deliberate behaviours are the person"s attitudes toward specific behaviours, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control.
