Neurotic anxiety: vague feelings caused by sensation that a break through the awareness barrier is imminent. Defence mechanisms: techniques to deal with unwanted thoughts and desires; these distort reality. More active by extracting repressed childhood memories. Described in the book, studies on hysteria. Among other techniques used was hypnosis: later technique. Less intrusive: observations led to interpretations (in other words, this was analysis) Patients were encouraged to freely express their thoughts, associations, dreams, and memories: free association. Intentions are to say whatever comes to mind. Client must relax (the classic couch), and produce material that the analyst can record and later interpret; timing must be right: goal was to treat neurosis , transference.
