SLGY 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Symbolic Interactionism, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman
Document Summary
Social scripts - we know what to say in social interactions. When someone says thank you, you say you"re welcome. Social forms (simmel)- less conscious, more hidden structure. You don"t necessarily know that you"re following social forms, you just do it. There is a social boundary that you remain within. You know what to wear to what. Wear something different to school, work, dinner out, etc. Even as forms change we change with them. There is no pinpointed time at which they change but we feel the change. Socialization allows us to learn these scripts and forms. How you see yourself is shaped by how others see you. Different stages set up the roles people play in social interactions. Expected behaviours, you follow the behaviours others expect of you. Role-making -creating your own role (still within boundaries) Conflict between needing to be there for your kid as a father and needing to complete work as an employee.
