Complex system of beliefs, ideas, values -non-material culture (beauty) Universal dimension of culture > it ties people together shared conceptions of right/wrong, good/bad, desirable/taboo. Many subcultures within the larger culture pick and choose which parts of the culture they want to accept sometimes comes from outside the culture and challenges it. Culture always involves power relationships and inequality. Culture and language can"t have one without the other signs and symbols example: saying jesus christ -difference between saying it when something goes wrong and in a church. Create cultural capital accent > what we perceive about someone based on their accent/where they"re from. Hockey, eh?, maple, poutine, environment (animals, weather), wealth, politeness, multicultural, etc.
