Terminology in Islam  Islam: name of religious tradition associated with Muhammad and Allah  Islamist: Muslim who is stricter in their practice, concerned with secularism and Islam's place in the contemporary world  Jihadist: someone who has a fundamental attitude, who is very interested in pushing their inner struggles on the outer world  Fundamentalist: seeks an aggressive return to basic views of the faith, traditionalist and conservative generally  Islamicist: someone who studies Islam History and Sources of Islam  begins with Abraham- a "religion of the Book"- God of Christians, Jews, Muslims is the same God  recall: God promised Abraham many children; Abraham took matters into his own hands because of Sarah's age and had a child with their servant, Hagar, who was called Ishmael (Ismail) o miraculously, Sarah had a child of her own, Isaac, and became jelous and chased Hagar and Ishmael out of the house o God promised Hagar that Ishmael would also "become a great nation" o between God's appearance to Hagar and the beginning of Islam, it is reffered to as Jahilayah- a time of spiritual ignorance- people are not connecting with nature or God  people living selfishly, worshipping idols  Muhammad (b. 570 CE) was born into this  recall: God chooses "regular people"- tradition continues with Muhammad, a trader o Muhammadwas orphaned, taken in by his uncle, works for and then marries an older widow at age 25 o he is very bothered by his tribe worshipping idols- spends a lot of time in contemplation about this  during one of these times, the angel Jibril (Gabriel) tells him to "recite," three times, and he does  at first he is very scared that he has been visited by a demon  Muhammad receives revelations from Allah to reform his people, these revelations become the Qur'an- they are the same teachings as Jesus, Noah, Moses, but more applicable to the people- "truer"  eventually, he speaks about the end of the world- judgment from God after death- particular and global  Islam grows quite rapidly- religious
