Topic 13: microbial diseases of the respiratory system. Upper respiratory tract has a number of potential pathogens. But the rest of the normal microbiota keep them in check. Diagnosis: (important as other organisms can cause similar symptoms) Rapid strep test- results in 10 minutes. Throat culture- throat swab, culture on blood agar, microscopy, serological testing. Grayish membrane in throat: fibrin, dead tissue, and bacterial cells. Prevented by vaccination: dpt, dtap, dt (d= diphtheria toxoid) Attaches to ciliated cells in trachea using fimbriae. 3 stages: catarrhal (initial) stage: like a cold, paroxysmal stage: 1-6 weeks. Then gasping for breath: convalescence stage: can last for months. Can culture pathogen from throat swab inserted through nose on a thin wire. Treatment: antibiotics, e. g. erythromycin; but not effective after onset of paroxysmal stage. Diagnosis: cultured from throat swab, sputum sample, identified by production of alpha- hemolysis on blood agar. In 2012, 8. 6 million people contracted tb and 1. 3 million died from tb.
