Cognitive views of abnormal behaviour disorders are caused or worsened by maladaptive thinking. Therapists help clients identify negative thoughts and perceptions and guide them to apply alternative ways of thinking. About as effective as drug therapy: 2/3 improve, also, used for panic disorders and social anxiety disorder. Note: beck was trained in psychoanalysis studied dream content of depressed people. Found that negative thinking pervades even dreams: second-wave cognitive-behavioural therapies. Clients accept thought rather than try to eliminate them. Good at treating depression, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety.
