SOCI 2100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: David Suzuki, Ascribed Status, White Flight
Document Summary
It is widely believed that canada has always been predominantly white, even though it is largely muli-ethnic. Naive people were in this country before whites, and chinese and black people have been here as long as whites have. Seen as an ascribed status, but during the 1930"s scienists began to quesion that idea. They inally came to the conclusion that racial diferences are insigniicant random and geneic diferences. Scienists back to the 1800"s used race as a way of categorizing people. In the 1980"s phillip rushton wanted to debate david suzuki over which race was superior. (suzuki was highly ofended by this idea of racial superiority. ) Today, race is used to classify signiicant groups (like whites) Sociologists believe that you can idenify with a race other than the one you are born with. Insituionalized racism: discriminatory racial pracices built into prominent structures in society (poliical, economic, and educaional) Xenophobia: hosility towards foreign things (people, customs, rituals, etc. )
