We don"t quite known what intelligence or iq is, yet we talk about it as if we do. To describe someone as having a low iq is an insult. We value intelligence highly in our society/culture. We seek to distinguish between those who have intelligence and those who do not. Iq was originally used to determine what children needed to be put in a special program because of low iq.
